Janet Thelermont lifts for bronze.
The Seychelles, a tiny archipelago northeast of Madagascar, has won its first medal at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games.
Weightlifter, Janet Thelermont, won bronze in the Women’s 69 kg class behind India’s Laishram Monika Devi.
The gold medal went to Canada’s Jeane Lassen.
Thelermont came to Melbourne ranked third in the 69kg class. She took bronze with a lift of 95kg in the Snatch and 110kg in the Clean & Jerk – well below her best weight for this category.
At the African Senior and Junior Weightlifting Championships in Uganda last year she won the same division, lifting 100kg in the Snatch and 120kg in the Clean & Jerk. Her best lift in the Clean & Jerk is 130kg.
The Seychelles came close to winning its first Games medal earlier in the competition, when 17-year old Weightlifter Clementina Agricole, finished the 53kg division contest with 152kg, the same as Australia’s bronze medallist, Jehan Latif.
However, she had to settle for fourth place after too many failed lifts.
In Commonwealth Games history, the Seychelles has won a total of three medals – all in boxing – bronze in Canada in 1994 and two silver medals at Kuala Lumpur in 1998.
