100m Commonwealth Champion Asafa Powell.
Jamaica has won gold in the prestigious Men’s and Women’s 100 metres finals at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games.
Outright favourite, Asafa Powell, stamped his authority on the Men’s final from the start, recording a time outside his world record and the Commonwealth Games record but easily accounting for the rest of the field.
His time was 10.03 seconds – 0.26 seconds slower than the world record he set in Athens in 2005.
Silver went to Nigeria’s Soji Fasuba in 10.11 with Trinidad and Tobago’s Marc Burns was third in 10.17.
In the Women’s final, Jamica’s, Sheri-Ann Brooks, took gold ahead of South Africa’s Geraldine Pillay with Delphine Atangana, of Cameroon winning the bronze medal.
Brooks’ time of 11.19 seconds was 0.28 seconds outside the Commonwealth Games record of 10.91 set by Debbie Ferguson, of the Bahamas at the Manchester Games in 2002.
